Rev. Hugh, Teacher & Resident Monk

Rev. Hugh Gould is the resident monk and teacher at the Priory. He was ordained as a Buddhist monk in 1988 by Rev. Master Jiyu-Kennett and trained as a novice monk at Shasta Abbey for nine years.

Following Rev. Master Jiyu’s death in 1996, he continued his training with Rev. Master Daizui MacPhillamy, one of her senior disciples, at Fugen Forest Hermitage for a further nine years. During this time, he received Dharma Transmission in 1997, became a teacher in 2000, and was named a Master in 2003.

In 2006, Rev. Hugh joined the community of Throssel Hole Buddhist Abbey in northern England, where he lived and practiced as a resident monk for over thirteen years. During his time in the UK, he also served as a Buddhist chaplain at Newcastle University, working with students and faculty and offering support around meditation and the challenges of everyday life.

In June 2021, he was appointed Prior of the Eugene Buddhist Priory. He now offers teaching and guidance to those who come, whether new to meditation or continuing an established practice.
