Saturday 5th – INTRODUCTION TO ZEN MEDITATION 10am – 12noon, This is an introduction to the meditation and practice we follow at the Eugene Buddhist Priory. You don’t need any previous experience to take part—we’ll guide you through it.
Our form of Buddhist meditation is known as Serene Reflection Meditation (called Soto Zen in Japan). We explore the mind of meditation and the physical postures used—seated on a cushion, kneeling, or in a chair—so that each person can find a way of sitting that is steady, relaxed, and alert. We then share a short period of meditation together, followed by time for questions and discussion.
We also introduce Zen ceremonial, the support of the Buddhist Precepts, and how meditation can carry into daily life through mindfulness and everyday activity. There is also the opportunity to talk with a teacher about the practice and about questions or challenges in daily life.
In a world that can feel fast-paced and often overwhelming, this can be a simple way to pause and settle. As we sit with our own unique life, the practice can begin to open into a quiet sense of completeness—a feeling of being at home in our own life and within the world.
Please wear comfortable, loose-fitting clothing. If you plan to attend, kindly phone or email the priory in advance. There is no charge for the introduction or for any of our activities.
