Dear Friend,

Thank you for your interest in our temple. We practice a form of Buddhist meditation known as Serene Reflection Meditation, called Soto Zen in Japan and Ts’ao-Tung Ch’an in China. To bring us to ultimate fulfillment, meditation practice requires personal effort and commitment. A qualified teacher and local community can be an invaluable resource and support. We hope this information will help you decide if this is an approach you would like to explore further.

The best introduction to our practice is an orientation offered one Saturday each month, beginning at 8:45 am. It includes meditation instruction, sitting and walking meditation, a short service (scripture recitation), a class on the Buddhist precepts and daily life practice, and an opportunity for questions. Please wear loose-fitting, modest, respectful clothing (no shorts, tights, jeans or low cut tops). The orientation usually ends about 11:30.

Each orientation is offered by one of our lay ministers under my supervision as the resi-dent teacher. As a monastic disciple of Rev. Master Jiyu-Kennett, I received ordination from her in 1984 and Dharma transmission in 1990. I was later named as a master of our Order, and have served as Prior here since 1998.

In the upcoming year (2008), the dates of the orientations are:
January 5, February 6, March 1, April 5, May 3, June 7, July 12, August 9, September 6, October 4, (November and December TBA).

If you plan to attend, we’d be grateful for a call to know you’re coming. If the Saturday orientation is not a time that you can come, call to make an appointment for instruction at another time.

The Priory does not charge for the orientation or for any meditation, service, or activity. We gratefully accept any offering you wish to bring—cash, food (no meat, alcohol or garlic), household goods—whatever you deem appropriate and in accordance with your means.

We would be glad to hear from you. May you and all beings be well and free from sorrow.

Rev. Oswin Hollenbeck, Prior
